Minerva Academy FC will be playing their second match of the 2nd Division I-League on Sunday when they take on the mighty Mohammedan Sporting Club at the Barasat Stadium. The match will kick-off at 3:00 PM
Minerva Academy FC are coming into the match, having played out a goalless draw against NEROCA FC in their first match in Imphal while Mohammedan Sporting Club has got a win behind their back.
But unfortunately, they have been stripped off the 3 points they earned against Lonestar Kashmir FC by FIFA Disciplinary Committee for an incident that happened few years ago. So, they will have to start from scratch on Sunday.
For Minerva, its a must-win game to catch up with other teams aiming for the I-League. NEROCA beat Dempo SC on Saturday, taking their tally to four to top the standing. So, the Pride of Punjab need anything but a win to keep up with NEROCA.
“We will go into the match with a positive frame of mind, aiming for 3 points. But we are playing a club with over 100 years of legacy and its not going to be easy,” said coach Surinder Singh in the pre-match press conference adding that, “They have some very good and experience players. They are also playing at home.”
“But I have full confidence in my boys. We played very well against NEROCA and took lots of positives from that match which we are going to implement today. So, if we play to our potential, I am sure we will go back with 3 points,” Mr Singh added.
Coincidentally, Minerva will be captained by Kareem Omolaja on Sunday, who was the captain of the Black Panthers at the start of the season. The Nigerian defender was snapped up by Minerva in the winter transfer window.
“It always feels good to comeback to a place you were a part of. But on Sunday, I will be wearing the Minerva jersey and will do my best for my team,” he said.
“Both Minerva and Mohammedan are a good team and I am expecting a crackling match, played in the best game spirit,” Kareem concluded.
